Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The Fort Wayne Wizards pitching staff took on a new look today with the arrival of right-hander Nathan Staggs from the San Diego Padres' extended spring training camp in Peoria, Arizona. Staggs will take the place of right-hander Ben Krosschell, who was sent down to extended spring training by the Padres organization.
Staggs signed with the Padres earlier this season after a try-out camp. He was originally drafted by the Florida Marlins in the 26th round of the 2000 June Amateur but chose to attend college at the University of Arizona and Grossmont College in San Diego. He graduated from Mesa State College in Colorado. He attended the University of San Diego High School and was a USA Today All-USA High School pitcher and All-CIF basketball player.
Staggs appeared in 26 games for the San Diego Surf Dawgs of the independent Golden Baseball League last year, finishing with a 2.83 earned run average and 39 strikeouts in 41 innings.
Krosschell, drafted by the Padres in the 16th round of the 2004 June Amateur Draft, made four starts for the Wizards this season. He was 1-3 with an 8.47 ERA in 17 innings of work. He allowed 22 hits and eight walks, while striking out 10.
With the promotion of Staggs, who is expected to work out of the bullpen, Joel Santo will be moved into the Fort Wayne starting rotation.
Santo will make his first start of the 2006 season for the Wizards on Tuesday against the Beloit Snappers (Minnesota Twins affiliate).
Please note that Staggs will wear number 30 and infielder Abraham Aguilar has switched his uniform from 30 to 10. Manny Ayala, who joined the Wizards on Tuesday, is wearing number 12.
