Swing activate Friday's starter, Hayes retires
April 28, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Josh Wilson, a second round pick in the 2005 draft, has been activated and will start Friday night in the series finale against the Beloit Snappers, the St. Louis Cardinals announced Friday. Wilson will take the roster spot of Calvin Hayes, who has begun taking the necessary steps towards retirement.
Wilson, 19, was the 70th overall selection in the 2005 draft, taken by the Cardinals with the pick they received from San Francisco in compensation for the loss of free agent Mike Matheny. In the running to make the Quad Cities starting rotation before the season, Wilson was the odd man out and began the season at extended spring training. In 2005, the native of Tyler, Texas, was 2-2 with a 4.22 ERA in 12 starts for Johnson City of the Appalachian League.
Departing from the Swing roster will be Calvin Hayes, a former third round pick in the 2003 draft from Salisbury, North Carolina. Hayes has been placed on the Restricted List by the Cardinals, and will have to apply for retirement before being placed on the Voluntary Retirement List. Through 17 games this season, the second baseman was hitting .137.
Hayes hit .304 with the Peoria Chiefs in 2004, then St. Louis' Midwest League affiliate. After starting the 2005 season with the High-A Palm Beach Cardinals, he would eventually suit up for Quad Cities (.242 in 28 games) and New Jersey of the New York-Penn League while hitting .220 overall.
UP NEXT: The Swing will wrap up their series with the Beloit Snappers Friday night, sending RHP Josh Wilson to the mound against LHP Brian Duensing (0-1, 1.93). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and pre-game coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 6:15.
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS: The Swing of the Quad Cities will close out the month of April with some great promotions. The first 500 fans through the gates on April 28 will be able to take advantage of a poster giveaway courtesy of Wolfe Beverage/Miller Lite, and April 29 will feature the first fireworks night of the year, sponsored by i-wireless, WOC, WFXN, and KWQC. The month ends with a Mix 96 Family Fun Day on April 30, complete with clowns, face-painting, and the opportunity for kids to run the bases after the game.
