February 3, 2004 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Odessa Jackalopes News Release
Odessa Jackalopes General Manager Monty Hoppel has been awarded the Central Hockey League's Commitment Cup, an honor relating to the franchise's commitment and dedication to the league.
The full name of the award is the HRH N. Thomas Berry Commitment Cup, named for the CHL's Commissioner Emeritus. A former International Hockey League Commissioner, N. Thomas Berry is one of professional hockey's most respected executives, and is largely responsible for the creation of the current Central Hockey League.
"What an honor to receive such a prestigious award, one named after Tom Berry," said Hoppel.
"The entire Jackalopes organization and staff should be proud of this recognition," Hoppel added. "I believe our staff and ownership group have been dedicated to the league and to the tremendous fans in the Permian Basin for the seven years we've been in existence."
The Jackalopes, owned and operated by the same staff and ownership as the Midland RockHounds professional baseball club, were "born" in 1997 as members of the former Western Professional Hockey League. Prior to the 2000-2001 season, the WPHL merged with the Central Hockey League to form the current CHL. The Jacks were named the WPHL's Franchise of the Year in each of their first two seasons (1997-98 and 1998-99).
"We have tried to provide outstanding service in all departments of our operation," Hoppel said. "And we have always done everything possible to maintain a high level of professionalism."
"On behalf of our owners and our entire staff, I'd like to thank (CHL President) Brad Treliving and the CHL for recognizing the Jackalopes and our commitment to professional hockey in West Texas," Hoppel said.
"Monty Hoppel embodies all that this award represents, relative to his commitment to the CHL, and is most deserving of this recognition."
