Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - A short three-game winning streak came to an end Saturday night as the Clinton LumberKings fell to the Peoria Chiefs, 6-4. Chiefs second baseman Robinson Chirinos pounded out four singles against L-Kings pitching, scoring the eventual game-winner in the seventh inning.

Chirinos and the Chiefs offense manufactured the go-ahead run on L-Kings reliever J.B. Diaz (L, 2-1). Chirinos started things off with a single to left. He then moved up to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third as Jonathan Mota grounded out to the right side. Chirinos came home on a sacrifice fly by Jesus Valdez. The Chiefs added an insurance run in the ninth on another sacrifice fly.

The LumberKings stormed out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning off Chiefs starter Scott Taylor. Matt Smith led off the game with a triple as outfielders Davy Gregg and Valdez collided in pursuit. Smith came home on a single by Jose Vallejo, and two batters later, Vallejo would score on an RBI double down the right field line by Terry Blunt. Joe Kemp finished off the damage, knocking home Blunt with a sharp line single to center.

The Chiefs battled back with two in the third inning off L-Kings starter Zach Phillips, and tied the game in the fourth as Chirinos singled home Alberto Garcia with two outs. Clinton would take another one-run lead in the fifth, but again the Chiefs had an answer as Matt Ciaramella left the yard with a solo blast to right.

Reliever Justin Rayborn (W, 1-1) pitched a scoreless sixth to earn the victory. Three Chiefs relievers combined to two-hit the LumberKings over the final four innings. Closer Ed Campusano recorded his league-leading 15th save, striking out the side in the ninth.

Freddie Thon extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the third. Blunt led the way for the offense with a 2-for-4 night, scoring a pair of runs and driving in one. John Mayberry also posted a two-hit night for the LumberKings.

The series concludes tomorrow afternoon at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch set for 2:00 pm. It's Regalia Patriotic Pencil giveaway as Jake Rasner (3-3) takes the mound for Clinton against right-hander Todd Blackford (3-1) for Peoria.
