Devil Rays Lose Second Consecutive to Whitecaps

May 27, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays dropped their second contest in a row to the West Michigan Whitecaps by a score of 7-1. The game was close until the seventh inning when the Whitecaps pulled away.

Wade Davis took the mound for the Devil Rays and pitched six solid frames. Davis fanned eight batters and only allowed one earned run while giving up seven hits. Davis' league leading ERA was raised slightly to 1.00 in his tenth outing of the season. Wade left after the sixth inning and things fell apart for the Rays after that.

Drew Bigda entered the game in the seventh for the Devil Rays and had a rough go of it. Bigda walked three batters and was credited two earned runs. He was pulled with the bases loaded and two outs. Aaron Walker came in the finish the inning and gave up a hit which scored the men on second and third. Walker struck out the next four batters he faced before turning the game over to Billy Evers.

Evers struggled to find a groove in the ninth inning. He gave up three hits, two walks, a wild pitch, and four runs. After the top of the ninth the Rays trailed 7-1, a deficit that they could not overcome.

Although Southwest Michigan has struggled at the plate, there is a ray of hope. Before the game, David Cardona was lifted off of the disabled list to replace newcomer Jason St. Clair who was placed on the temporarily inactive list. Cardona took his first at-bat of the season for the Rays while pinch hitting in the bottom of the ninth. He rifled one up the middle to give him a single in his only plate appearance. Cesar Suarez was also impressive in only his third game as a Devil Ray. In the fourth inning, Suarez drove one down the right field line to give him a triple. It was his second extra base hit in his short tenure with the Rays.

The series finally is Sunday afternoon at 3:35 pm at C.O. Brown Stadium. It's McCullough Family Chiropractic Family Sunday. It is also the first youth baseball clinic of the year. Area little leaguers can come to C.O. Brown at 1:00 pm and take part in a clinic hosted by the Devil Rays. Kids will be instructed by the Southwest Michigan coaching staff and players. The first 90 kids to sign up will receive the clinic, a game ticket, and lunch for free courtesy of Imperial Beverage. Kids also get to run the bases just like the pros after the game.
