Burlington Bees News Release
Beloit, WI - Edward Ovalle's two-run, walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Beloit Snappers (23-24) to a 4-3 win over the Burlington Bees (23-23) at Pohlman Field tonight. The win snaps a six-game losing streak for Beloit and a four-game winning streak for the Bees. The Bees are 5-2 on this road trip with both losses coming on walk-off home runs.
The Bees got on the board first with a run in the top of the third without the benefit of a hit. With one out, Snappers' starter Kyle Waldrop walked Jose Duarte who then stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch. It was the only run allowed by Waldrop on three hits through seven innings.
Bees' starter David Henninger matched Waldrop every step of the way. After a leadoff single by Erik Lis in the bottom of the second, Henninger retired 13 in a row before a walk to Tarrence Patterson with one out in the sixth. Patterson was caught stealing and Henninger got out of the inning. In the bottom of the seventh, the Snappers rallied with two outs to tie the score. Lis singled, Ovalle walked, and Dwayne White singled to right to drive in the run that evened the score. Henninger finished the inning to set a new career-high with seven innings pitched.
David Shinskie took over on the mound in the top of the eighth inning and struck out the first two batters before the Bees mounted a two-out rally of their own. Brady Everett singled and has a hit in all six games he's played in for the Bees. Mario Lisson pinch-ran for him at second. JP Lowen followed with a single that moved Lisson to third and Jeff Howell singled up the middle to drive in Lisson ad put the Bees back on top 2-1. Carlos Arroyo followed with a single of his own that drove in Lowen to extend the lead to 3-1. Duarte added an infield single to load the bases before Ethien Santana was called out on strikes to enkes to end the inning. Eliezer Garcia pitched a perfect eighth and the Bees almost had an insurance run taken away against Frank Mata in the ninth. Valentino Arce led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Chris McConnell. Jeremy Jirschele flied to center and Arce came in to score ahead of the throw, but was called out for leaving too early and the Bees missed out on an extra run.
In the bottom of the ninth, Drew Thompson led off with a ground ball to the right side, Arce made a diving stop, but his throw sailed wide and went into the dugout for a hit and an error that moved Thompson to second. A groundout moved Thompson to third and then Lis doubled to right to drive in Thompson and get the tying run into scoring position. Kraig Schambough (1-1) took over for Garcia and Ovalle hit his second pitch off the scoreboard in left-center for the game-winning hit. Mata (2-1) ends up with the win. The Bees still lead this series 2-1 and the season series 4-2.
These two teams will wrap up this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at Pohlman Field. RH Chris Nicoll (3-2, 1.82) will start for the Bees against LH Brian Duensing (2-2, 2.11) for Beloit. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
