Chinooks Fall Short in Battle for Top Spot

Pitching ruled again in the Chinooks 2-3 loss against the La Crosse Loggers Tuesday night. Coming into tonight's game the Chinooks and Loggers were tied at the top of the South Division standings with the Loggers owning sole possession of the lead after tonight's games.

Starting pitcher Nick Soldano (North Park) pitched a gem for the Chinooks, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits, with 3 walks and 2 strike outs. His counterpart Jesse Holiday gave up 8 hits to the Chinooks, but all were singles that couldn't muster up more run support. "We need to be more efficient and get more production out of those hits and that's the concern. The bright side is that we are putting barrels on the ball. We are getting some hits, we need to just start putting them together and being a little bit more productive," said head coach John Vodenlich.

The scoring started early as Scott Wilcox (Western Kentucky) scored in the first inning on a fly ball to center field by Designated Hitter Bre' Kimbell (Louisiana Tech).

The Loggers evened the score in the top of the next inning on a single by Steven Pallares which scored Tyler Servais.

Not to be outdone, the Chinooks followed with a 1 run second inning. Left fielder Ryan Ussery (UAB) singled to start the inning, then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Servais. After a pop-out by Zack Granite (Seton Hall) for out number one, catcher Connor Lynch (Georgia Tech) scored Ussery on a single to center field to put the Chinooks on top 2-1.

In the fifth, Austin Bailey walked to start the inning and advanced to third on an overthrown pick-off attempt. Bailey reached home on a sac fly by Steven Pallares to tie the game 2-2.

Cody Glenn (LSU) came in to finish out the game for the Chinooks and pitched a shutout seventh inning before giving up a double that slid under the fence, into the bullpen. Brandon Defazio scored on the play while Brandon Bednar was called back to third after the obstruction ruling. A routine ground ball ended the inning, limiting further damage, but was enough to earn Glenn the loss.

Dan Sayles recorded the win for the Loggers while Jacob Dorris saved the game, pitching a clean ninth inning.

Tomorrow's home stand continues at Kapco Park, this time against the Green Bay Bullfrogs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm. Fans attending tomorrow's game will receive a free commemorative Chinooks drawstring backpack.
