Offense Not Enough for Beetles

June 12, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Alexandria Beetles News Release

Mankato, MN - Despite pounding out eight runs and 14 hits, led by a 3-5, 3 RBI day from Ben Moore, the Alexandria Beetles (3-9) dropped a shootout to the Mankato MoonDogs (10-3) on Monday night to start a three game series.

In a rematch of last year's North Division Championship Series, the bats were the story for both teams as only two starters - both for Mankato - failed to record at least one hit.

Ali Simpson lasted two innings in his first Alexandria start, surrendering two runs and four walks, while Mankato starter Seth Webster lasted just 3.2 while getting tagged for seven runs on 10 hits.

But the Beetles blew leads of 2-0, 3-2, and 7-4 and left the tying runs on base in the ninth against the MoonDogs.

As they have all season long, Alexandria jumped on the board first with two in the top of the second. Moore led off the inning with his first homerun of the season, to left, and a walk and a pair of singles by Josh Guerra and Josh Carpenter scored Alexandria's second run.

The lead was short lived as the MoonDogs used three walks and a hit-by-pitch to tie the score.

Moore doubled home David Garcia to put Alexandria in front 3-2 in the third only to see Mankato take its first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homerun by Craig Massoni.

The back and forth affair swung back in favor of the Beetles in the top of the fourth when they chased Webster with the big knock, a bases clearing double by Matt Beaty to score three for his first Alexandria hit. Moore singled home Beaty for the fourth run of the inning.

But up 7-4, the Beetles surrender a single run in the bottom of the fourth and then three in the bottom of the fifth as Mankato took the lead for good. Chase Fowler hit a two run homerun to tie the game, and a three-base throwing error on a swinging bunt followed by a sacrifice fly gave the MoonDogs an 8-7 lead.

Trailing 10-7, Alexandria pulled one back in the top of the eighth on a pair of errors but left a runner on third with one out. And in the ninth inning, the Beetles put the tying runs on base but could not score.

The teams play game two on Tuesday night at 7 CDT.
