GENEVA, Ill. - Returning the favor with a big lead early in the ballgame, the Chiefs (9-4, 46-36) evened the series with the Cougars (9-3, 54-28) with an 8-5 win at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Wednesday evening.

Tyler Skulina quickly found trouble against the Chiefs offense allowing three runs on three hits. After exceeding his pitch count in the opening inning, Mark Johnson pulled his starter after just two-thirds of the first frame and brought in Corbin Hoffner with his team trailing by three. Hoffner finished off the first, but allowed Peoria to double the damage with three more runs in the following inning. After two frames the Chiefs led 6-0.

Despite getting nine base runners, putting the ball in play was a challenge for the Cougars against Peoria's starter Alex Reyes (6-5). The Chiefs' right-hander worked five scoreless innings against the Cougars fanning 10 batters, but walking seven. Reyes also raised eyebrows by giving up as many hits as he did balks with two in his second consecutive win against the Cougars.

The Cougars did not score until facing a new pitcher in Brandon Lee trailing 7-0 in the sixth inning. After the first Cougar run came home on an error, Ben Carhart and Yasiel Balaguert provided RBI singles to bring the Cougars within four runs. Lee walked Jacob Rogers and Will Remillard to begin the seventh inning and the Cougars took advantage with back-to-back RBI singles from David Bote and Jacob Hannemann. After seven frames it was 7-5 Chiefs.

All the offense ended in the seventh for the Cougars and the Chiefs punched in another run in the top of the ninth.

Skulina (4-4) suffered the loss, but the Cougars saw a solid outing from Gerardo Concepcion in his first appearance back from the disabled list with three innings of one-run baseball. Steven Sabatino (3) worked a two and one-third inning save.

The rubber game of this series will take place at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Thursday with Daury Torrez (8-3, 23.14) on the mound for the Cougars against Peoria's Chase Brookshire (2-3, 4.92). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
