
Lugnuts outslug Whitecaps, 9-8

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (8-6, 40-43) outlasted the West Michigan Whitecaps (8-6, 49-35) in a back-and-forth contest on Thursday night, picking up a 9-8 win to take the rubber match of the three-game series at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The Lugnuts clubbed 13 hits as the bullpen held the Whitecaps to one run after the fifth inning.
With the Lugs trailing 7-6, center fielder D.J. Davis opened the seventh inning with a triple off of reliever Montreal Robertson (Blown Save, 2)(Loss, 3-4). Matt Dean followed with a single to score Davis and tie the game.
Catcher Mike Reeves gave the Lugnuts the lead with an RBI double in the eighth, and designated hitter Anthony Alford singled him in later in the inning to put Lansing ahead 9-7.
West Michigan catcher Grayson Greiner hit an RBI double in the ninth to cut the lead to 9-8, but Lansing closer Griffin Murphy (Save, 16) stranded him at second to end the game.
Lansing reliever Brady Dragmire (Win, 3-3) entered in the fifth inning and pitched 3.1 scoreless relief innings with four strikeouts.
After falling behind 3-1 in the first inning, the Lugnuts erupted for five runs in the top of the second, capped by a three-run homer by Dean, who finished the night 2-for-5 with four RBIs and a run scored.
Lansing starter Jeremy Gabryszwski did not receive a decision after pitching 4.2 innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits.
Davis went 2-for-4 with a walk, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Mitch Nay plated his team-high 42nd RBI of the season.
West Michigan starter Jonathan Crawford allowed six runs on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout.
Lansing hit 6-for-17 with runners in scoring position, stranding seven runners on base for the night.
The Lugs return home for a special 4th of July spectacular at Cooley Law School Stadium, with a Flat Screen Friday presented by Auto-Owners allowing fans eight opportunities to win a flat screen TV, and fantastic Independence Day LAFCU Fireworks following the game. Lansing lefty Shane Dawson (2-4, 3.54) will start on the mound, with right-hander Victor Arano (3-3, 4.42) pitching for Great Lakes.
