Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - It took all of last season for the Cougars to tally 55 wins. This season the Cougars have already notched a First Half Western Division Championship, thrown a no-hitter and still haven't seen a series lost at home. With 10,515 in attendance at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Thursday evening, the Cougars (10-3, 55-28) improved to 35-10 at home by taking the series over the Peoria Chiefs (9-5, 46-38) with a 10-2 victory.

Yasiel Balaguert's two-run double in the first inning put the Cougars up initially as he drove home Jake Hannemann, who reached on an error, and Kyle Schwarber. Juan Herrera's second error of the ball game sparked another productive inning for the Cougars. Herrera couldn't handle Cael Brockmeyer's ground ball and Carlos Penalver followed with a walk. After Shawon Dunston Jr.'s groundout moved both runners over, David Bote stretched out an infield single for an RBI hit. Hannemann connected on a single to right field to plate Penalver. Bote, on his way to third base, was hit by the throw from the outfield and scored as the baseball rolled towards Peoria's dugout.

Daury Torrez (9-3) came into the ballgame with a 16-inning scoreless streak and saw that trend stretch to 20 frames before a defensive miscue. With the Cougars leading 5-0 the Chiefs first got on the board with two unearned runs in the 5th. An error by Carlos Penalver kept the inning alive and allowed Justin Ringo to bring home two more runs with a single. Peoria wouldn't see the scoreboard again.

Cael Brockmeyer grabbed one of those runs back with a solo blast in the sixth frame.

The Cougars added more insurance in the eighth inning as they batted around to plate four runs. Contributors were Dunston with an RBI double and Bote's two-run single. Schwarber also beat out a fielder's choice for the tenth and final run of the game, with the Cougars leading 10-2.

Chase Brookshire (2-4) suffered the loss with outing of seven innings. Out of the six runs that the Cougars scored with Brookshire on the mound, two of them were earned.

The Cougars will now head on the road to begin a six-game road trip. Independence Day will be celebrated in Clinton, Iowa against the Lumber Kings. Friday's matchup will feature Juan Paniagua (4-3, 3.11) against Clinton's Blake Holovach. The game can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
