Chiefs Take Afternoon Victory, 11-7

Grand Chute, WI - The Peoria Chiefs put an emphatic end on their seven-day roadtrip with an 11-7 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday afternoon. The win moves the Chiefs back to five games over .500 at 30-25 as they finish the road trip 5-2 including three wins in Wisconsin. After an offday the Chiefs begin the final homestand of the first half on Wednesday just 1 ½ games out of a playoff spot.

The Chiefs jumped out to an early lead against Preston Gainey in the top of the first. Breyvic Valera led off with a hustle double and Ildemaro Vargas sacrificed back to the mound. Gainey's throw to first went down the right-field line allowing Valera to score as Vargas reached second. Vargas was stranded at third after stealing a base as Gainey escaped the inning.

Wisconsin answered in the bottom of the inning against Silfredo Garcia. Michael Reed drew a walk to start the frame and stole second. He moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Tyrone Taylor. Garcia struck out the last two batters in the inning to strand Taylor at second.

The Chiefs regained the lead in the second inning. With one down Charlie Tilson beat out a bunt for a single and moved to third on a single by Nick Martini. Gerwuins Velazco put the Chiefs on top 2-1 with a sacrifice fly to center and Valera singled to center. Vargas put the Chiefs on top 4-1 with a triple to right-center before Gainey got out of the inning.

Wisconsin narrowed the gap over the next two innings. In the second Mike Garza led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by Max Walla. In the third it was Reed was Reed who led off with an infield single With two down and Reed at second, Adam Giacolone singled to center to cut the Chiefs lead to 4-3.

The Chiefs broke the game open in the fourth and knocked Gainey from the contest. Tilson drew a leadoff walk and Martini also walked before Taylor Wall replaced Gainey on the mound. Velazco laid down a sac bunt and Garza threw wild to first as Tilson scored. Valera's third hit of the game scored Martini for a 6-3 Chiefs lead and Vargas sacrificed. Wisconsin intentionally walked Jacob Wilson and Jordan Walton singled home two for an 8-3 lead. With runners on the corners, Wall faked to third which is now a balk and Wilson came home for a 9-3 Chiefs lead.

The Chiefs added two in the eighth against Eric Semmmelhack. With two down Vargas doubled to right and Wilson drew a walk. Walton doubled down the right field line for two more RBI and an 11-3 Chiefs lead as Wilson and Vargas both scored. Wisconsin grabbed a solo tally in the bottom of the eighth off Joe Donofrio and three in the ninth off Michael Aldrete to end the scoring at 11-7.

Garcia (2-1) tied a career high with seven innings pitched in the win. He struck out six and walked one while allowing three runs on six hits. Donofrio allowed one run on two hits in one inning of work. Michael Aldrete allowed three runs on four hits and a walk in the ninth inning while striking out one.

Notes: Valera has a 10-game hit streak, his longest streak this season... He leads the Chiefs with 18 multi-hit games including three in a row...The Chiefs have scored 42 runs in the first inning this season, more than any other inning...Velazco drove in his first run of the season in his 29th game with a sac fly in the second inning...Walton had a career-high four RBI and tied a career-high with three hits...Garcia tied a career high with seven innings pitched...He threw seven innings in his final start of 2012...Martini has back-to-back two-hit games...Donofrio has retired the first batter faced in 16 of his 17 outings...The Chiefs have won four straight series and have not lost a series since May 8-10 at Beloit...The Chiefs are 10-10 in day games this season, 4-8 on the road...The Chiefs are 10-7 in the last game of a series and 4-4 on the road...Tuesday is a MWL offday...The Chiefs return home Wednesday to host Clinton at 6:30 p.m. with post-game Fireworks...Wednesday is also a Won Dollar Wednesday with $1 hot dogs, $1 ice cream sandwiches and $1 fountain sodas...Students with straight A's on their last report card can get a free ticket at the Box Office...If the Chiefs don't win all fans can exchange their ticket for a free ticket to any Monday through Wednesday game...The Chiefs will start RH Cory Jones (1-0, 0.00) against Clinton RH Dylan Unsworth (4-0, 2.25)...
