Burlington Bees News Release

Reid Scoggins picked up his first win of the season, delivering five innings of one-run ball and Garrett Baker fired four innings out of the bullpen for his first save, as the Burlington Bees defeated the Clinton Lumberkings 6-2 on Monday night at Ashford University Field.

It had been an up and down season for Reid Scoggins (1-3), putting together an earned run average under two in April and almost six in May, but the right-hander was stellar in the final game of the series in Clinton. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim #15 prospect went a career-high five innings, allowing just two hits and three walks, while striking out four. He wiggled out of a bases-loaded jam with nobody out in the fourth, allowing just one run to come home.

Burlington got on the board early against Blake Holovach (0-1), stringing together four straight hits to start the second. Chevy Clarke tripled and then Chance Ross, Andrew Ray and Anthony Bemboom hit back-to-back-to-back singles. Ross' single scored Clarke and Bemboom's hit brought home Ross.

The Bees (22-30) added three more against Holovach in the fourth. Bemboom reached on an error by the Lumberkings (27-30) starter to begin the inning. After Wendell Soto flied out, Kevin Moesquit singled to put two men on for Kyle Johnson. Moesquit finished the night 3-for-5 in his first start atop the batting order. Johnson flied out, but Hinkle blasted a three-run home run down the right field line to put the Bees ahead 5-0. That home run was the first home run that brought home more than two runs this season.

In the bottom of the inning, Scoggins ran into some major trouble. He walked both Dario Pizzano and Guillermo Pimentel and hit Taylor Ard to load the bases with nobody out. Bees pitching coach Trevor Wilson came to the mound for a brief visit and Scoggins went on to get Tyler Martlette to ground into a double play and Patrick Kivlehan to ground out to end the inning. Only one run scored on the double play ball.

Burlington would add one in the seventh on a Ray single that scored Ross, while Clinton would get one in the ninth against Garrett Baker. Baker was fantastic, throwing four innings of one-run ball, setting down the first 10 batters he faced. Baker picked up his second save of the year.

The Bees will now return home for a seven-game homestand against the Kane County Cougars and Beloit Snappers. The Cougars will send Pierce Johnson the mound on Wednesday opposite of Aaron Newcomb. Tuesday will be a league-wide off-day.
