Lansing Lugnuts News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - Solid pitching and a pair of late runs helped the Lansing Lugnuts (25-29) complete a four-game sweep of the Great Lakes Loons (18-39) with a 2-1 victory at Dow Diamond on Monday night.
The Lugs have now won 10 of 11 meetings against the Loons this season, finishing with a 4-6 record on their season-long 10-game road trip.
After cruising through the first seven frames, Loons starter Jharel Cotton came on to start the eighth in a 1-1 ballgame, but loaded the bases with Lugnuts before giving way to reliever Luis Meza.
Meza induced Jorge Flores to chop a grounder towards third with one out, but Flores beat out the throw to first, preventing a double play and allowing Chris Hawkins to score, giving Lansing a 2-1 lead.
Cotton (Loss, 2-5) pitched brilliantly for the Loons, but ultimately took the tough-luck loss. He lasted 7.1 innings, allowing two runs - both of them earned - on four hits. He struck out eight while allowing two walks, both of which came in the eighth, helping Lansing load the bases.
Lansing starter Daniel Norris tied a season-best with five innings pitched, allowing just a single run on two hits in the no-decision. Norris walked three and struck out a pair.
Kramer Champlin, Ian Kadish (Win, 1-2) and Arik Sikula combined to throw four scoreless innings out of the pen, sealing the win and the series sweep. Sikula earned his seventh save, his third of the series, with a 1-2-3 ninth.
In total, Lugnuts pitchers allowed just three hits to Great Lakes bats.
The Loons scored their only run of the game with the bases loaded in the fourth inning as Corey Seager beat out a fielder's choice, scoring Malcolm Holland.
Lansing came back from down 1-0 in the top of the seventh as Kevin Patterson launched a solo shot to right field, getting the Lugs the equalizer. The home run was the eighth of the year for Patterson (2-for-4), who went deep three times during the series.
The Lugnuts now return home to Lansing to start a three-game series against the Fort Wayne TinCaps following an off-day on Tuesday. The series opens with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday, to be dealt by Lugnuts right-hander Javier Avendano (4-3, 5.36). Zach Eflin (2-4, 3.65) will take the mound for the TinCaps.
Lansing Lugnuts tickets are available for purchase at lansinglugnuts.com and by calling 517-485-4500, and Lugnuts text alerts are easily accessed by texting LUGNUTS to 313131.
