Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-The Lake County Captains scored three runs in the first inning and held off a Dayton comeback bid to defeat the Dragons 6-5 on Monday night at Fifth Third Field. Lake County took three-out-of-four in the series as they dropped the Dragons to 24-33 in the first half. Lake County improved to 20-34.

Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso, the Reds 2012 first round draft pick, made his Midwest League debut. He allowed three runs in the first inning, then settled in over the next three frames. His final line included four innings, six hits and four runs with one walk and three strikeouts as he suffered the loss. He retired nine of the last 11 batters he faced.

All three Lake County runs in the first inning came after Travieso had gotten the first two batters on ground outs. He allowed four singles and a walk in the inning as the Captains raced out to the early 3-0 lead. Lake County added another run in the second and did not score again until the sixth.

Trailing 4-0 in the fourth, Dayton's Jesse Winker belted a solo home run to right field to get the Dragons comeback effort started. It was Winker's eighth homer of the year. The teams traded single runs in the sixth inning and Lake County added another in the seventh to extend their lead to 6-2. Dayton's Beau Amaral lined a two-run double to left field in the seventh to make it 6-4.

In Dragons half of the eighth, still trailing 6-4, Seth Mejias-Brean walked to start the inning and Jeff Gelalich ripped a double to the right field corner to put runners at second and third with no one out. But Junior Arias popped out to second as the runners held. Tanner Rahier grounded out to third to bring in one run and make it 6-5 before Joe Hudson struck out to end the inning with the tying run at third.

In the bottom of the ninth, Joe Terry doubled to the right field fence with two outs to again put the tying run in scoring position, but Winker struck out to end the game.

Wes Mugarian replaced Travieso in the fifth and worked two innings, allowing three hits and one run with no walks and one strikeout. Alejandro Chacin entered the game to start the seventh and tossed two innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run with one walk and two strikeouts. Ben Klimesh pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out two.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Amaral, Terry, and Gelalich each had two hits including a double. The Dragons stranded six runners in scoring position.

The Dragons do not play on Tuesday. They will travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky on Wednesday to meet the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 8:05 p.m. (EDT). Robert Stephenson (5-3, 3.32) will start for Dayton against Bowling Green's Blake Snell (1-4, 3.82).
