Peoria Chiefs News Release
Peoria, IL - In his third rehab start, Cubs' starting pitcher Wade Miller gave up four runs in three plus innings of work while striking out one as the Peoria Chiefs used back-to-back five-run innings in a 13-6 thumping of the Clinton LumberKings Monday night at O'Brien Field in front of a packed house of 6,287 fans.
With no score in the bottom of the third, Yusuf Carter and Alberto Garcia continued their hot hitting and started a five-run offensive explosion. With one away, Carter smoked an opposite field double off the top of the wall and later came in to score on Garcia's two-run blast, his second homer in as many days. The Chiefs weren't done yet. Dylan Johnston doubled into left-center and moved to third on Davy Gregg's single. Johnston then came in to score on a Robinson Chirinos sacrifice fly with Gregg advancing to third. Mark Reed came up and reached on an infield single and moved to second on a throwing error. Jesus Valdez capped off the five-run rally with an RBI single to right to plate Reed and make it a 5-0 game.
Clinton got two runs back in the third. With one out and runners on first and second, Jose Vallejo ripped a double to score Joe Kemp. Brian Valichka tried to score on the play all the way from first but was cut down at the plate by a nice relay by Carter and Chirinos with Reed hanging onto the ball after a big collision at the plate.
With two outs and Vallejo at third, K.C. Herren pulled a single to right to bring home Clinton's second run. The LumberKings were denied two more runs when Carter made a leaping catch on the warning track to rob John Mayberry of a two-run double.
Peoria answered right back in the third. With the bases loaded and one away, Gregg grounded one sharply to second, but it went right through the legs of Vallejo and Carter and Garcia came to the plate. Next up was Chirinos who rocketed a double to the deepest part of the park to bring home Johnston and Gregg. Valdez put the exclamation point on another five-run inning with a soft liner into centerfield to plate Chirinos and give the Chiefs a 10-2 lead.
The LumberKings scored again in their half of the fourth. Ian Gac tripled off the wall in right-center to score John Wittleman from first and later came in to score on a line drive single by Kemp to cut the Chiefs' lead to 10-4.
The Chiefs combined for three runs in the sixth and seventh. Garcia delivered a sacrifice fly to score Norwood for a lone run in the sixth. In inning number seven, Valdez hit an RBI groundout to bring home Chirinos from third and Ryne Malone singled to score Reed and make it a 13-4 game. Clinton scored two more in the eighth to cut the score to 13-6, but that's all they could squander up the rest of the way.
Miller allowed the four runs on six hits. He walked one and punched out one. Jesus Yepez came on in relief and pitched the rest of the way. The lefty allowed two runs over six innings in earning his fourth win of the year. Clinton starter Zach Phillips was draped with the loss. It was the third time the Chiefs have roughed him up this year in going five innings and allowing 10 runs, seven earned, on 11 hits.
