Hollimon's homers lead way in slugfest win over Lansing

LANSING - Mike Hollimon became the first Whitecap to hit two home runs in a single game this season and blasted West Michigan past Lansing, 10-8. The Whitecaps have won five games in a row.

Hollimon launched two run homers in back-to-back innings. His first came in the sixth and pulled the ‘Caps within two at 6-4. In the seventh, another two-run shot put West Michigan in front for good, 8-6.

The Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to four straight hits to begin the game off Kristian Bell. Cameron Maybin and Mike Hernandez each had RBI singles in the first.

Bell went on to retire the next seven consecutive West Michigan batters and did not allow another hit until the fourth inning.

West Michigan scored four runs to tie in the sixth. Will Rhymes and Maybin delivered RBI singles following the Hollimon homer earlier in the inning.

In the seventh, the ‘Caps grabbed a 10-6 lead on four more runs. Rhymes hit a two-run homer to cap the rally.

Burke Badenhop started on the mound for the Whitecaps. He was touched for six runs (5 ER) in 4.1 innings of work. For the fifth time this season, Badenhop allowed 10 hits.

Loren Fraser earned the win with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.

In the bottom of the ninth, Jacob Butler hit a two-out two run homer off Phil Napolitan to pull Lansing within two at 10-8. Anthony Claggett came and threw one pitch to Brian Bormaster, prompted a pop to the second baseman and earned the save.

Rhymes finished 3-for-6 in the game. Catcher Dusty Ryan went 3-for-5 for West Michigan.

Adrian Martin allowed five runs in 1.1 innings of relief for Lansing. He suffered the loss.
