South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend - Through the course of any teams winning streak, breaks must go that teams' way. For the South Bend Silver Hawks, it appears they are not only getting the rub of the green, but they are getting consistent play, good pitching and timely hits. Sunday night, a timely hit by Orlado Mercado in the tenth inning lifted the Hawks to their fifth straight win, in a 4-3 victory over the Swing of the Quad Cities.
The Hawks and Swing traded the lead between the first and top of the sixth inning.
The Swing's Colby Rasmus scored in the first on a throwing error by the Hawks Manny Ferrer. Ferrer made up for his error, driving in the tying run with a base hit to plate Greg Thomson, who reached on a double.
The Hawks took the lead in the fourth. Justin Upton led off with a single, stole second and third and came to the plate when centerfielder Shane Robinson overthrew catcher Bryan Anderson to give the Hawks a 2-1 advantage.
Quad Cities was able to equal the game in the sixth. A lead off single and stolen base put Tyler Green in scoring position and he scored on Jose Martinez' run producing double, knotting the game at two.
The Hawks were able to reclaim the lead in the sixth, when Will Crouch reached on a two out double and Trey Hendricks followed by reaching on a free pass. Starter Adam Daniels uncorked a wild pitch to move Crouch and Hendricks to third and second respectively. Daniels then intentionally walked Mercado to load the bases. Reliever Jason Cairns was brought into the contest and he unleashed a wild pitch that brought Crouch home to give the Hawks a 3-2 lead.
