Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Maybe it was the 1906 throwback Cedar Rapids Bunnies uniforms. Maybe it was Stephen Marek's eight innings en route to his 9th win. Maybe it was Josh Davies 5 RBI. Maybe it was the duct tape. Whatever it was, the Kernels hope it continues as they bounced the Bees in front of a Monday afternoon crowd of 2,135 on Mix 96.5/WMT AM 600 Dollar Dog Monday and IPTV Red Green Day at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Davies hit his second home run, a two run shot in the first inning off Burlington starter Carlos Rosa (6-5), and the Kernels, er Bunnies were on the run. Davies finished the day 3 for 4 with 5 RBI on the day. Brad Coon was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and Marco Albano was 2 for 4 with a stolen base.
Stephen Marek (9-1) scattered four hits over eight innings of work this afternoon. Marek struck out two and didn't walk anyone as he induced the Bees to ground out 11 times. Daniel Hawkins pitched an inning of relief, allowing a hit and one walk but no runs.
Leading 3-1 going into the bottom of the 7th, the Kernels exploded for 4 runs off Bee reliever Chris Hayes. Flint Wipke doubled, Mark Trumbo walked and everyone moved up a base on Marco Albano's single. Brad Coon laced a double to left field, scoring Wipke and Trumbon as Albano moved up to third. Then, Josh Davies singled, scoring Albano and Coon to make the final score 7-1 Bunnies.
The Kernels and Bees play game two of their four game series on Tuesday evening. The first 1,000 kids twelve and under through the gates get a free baseball bat from McDonald's. The Miller Mezzanine is open to the public - a $25 ticket gets you unlimited food and beverage all game and a great view of the fireworks. Fans are also encouraged to stay after the game and watch the downtown Freedom Festival Fireworks from the ballpark. Game time is 5 pm and the gates open at 4 pm.
