Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars celebrated their first walk-off win of the season Monday night at Elfstrom Stadium, beating the Dayton Dragons, 5-4 in rousing, comeback fashion in front of 9,381 fans. Jeff Baisley scored the game-winning run on a throwing error, which made Joe Newby the winning pitcher. The Cougars had only three hits but benefited from five Dayton errors and seven walks.

The Dragons struck first with an unearned run in the second against Cougars starter Joe Piekarz, but Jose Pineda belted a two-run homer off Zach Ward in the bottom half, and Raul Padron drove in a run for a 3-1 Cougar advantage.

Dayton chipped away at Piekarz for a run in the third and two in the sixth. The left-hander tossed six frames and allowed four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Randy Rapp pitched a pair of scoreless relief innings to give the Kane County offense a chance.

Justin Sellers squeezed in the tying run against Bo Lanier in the eighth for a 4-4 count, and the Cougars were given three walks, two wild pitches and a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth for the 5-4 win. Toddric Johnson's grounder to second was thrown away by Mike Griffin, and the Cougars erupted in victory.

Newby (3-0) grabbed the win, and Lanier (2-6) suffered the loss. The Cougars (7-5) have won three consecutive games and face Dayton (6-6) again Tuesday night at 6 CDT, as Trey Shields (6-8, 5.30) is scheduled to face Robert Manuel (0-1, 2.73).
