Chiefs Struggle Against Portland's Power Play, Fall 5-2 at Home
October 9, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs battled back in the third period, but couldn't keep up with the Portland Winterhawks as they dropped their third-straight at home, 5-2.
The Winterhawks got their first of four power play goals at 14:08 in the first period as Robbie Fromm-Delorme netted his second goal of the season. Portland extended their lead to two with only 12 seconds left in the frame as Dawson Pasternak scored his first of the year.
The second period saw Portland capitalize on two more power plays, first at 4:05 (Fromm-Delorme) and then at 13:00 (Kyle Chyzowski).
The Winterhawks netted yet another power play goal just over two minutes into the third period, this time from Jack O'Brien.
The Chiefs got on the board at 5:37 on a power play of their own in the third period when defenseman Graham Sward found rookie Berkly Catton in the slot and he fired the puck top shelf for his second goal of the year. Chase Bertholet also earned an assist on the play.
Spokane added another at 11:07 when Kooper Gizowski raced up the right wing and connected with defenseman Ben Bonni who chipped it into the net for his first career Western Hockey League goal. That's as close as the Chiefs would get, though, as they lost 5-2.
Spokane outshot Portland in two of the three periods (10-7 in the first and 9-8 in the third), but struggled on the penalty kill (3-for-7).
Mason Beaupit started in net and turned aside 23-of-28 shots faced.
Up next, the Chiefs will host the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday, October 14. It's an Avista Poster giveaway, as the first 1,000 fans through the doors will get a poster featuring a Chiefs player, courtesy of Avista Utilities.
