Medicine Hat Tigers News Release

Portland, OR - The Medicine Hat Tigers found themselves down 3-1 late in the third period, but found a way to get to overtime against the Portland Winterhawks Saturday Night at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

It didn't start out the way the Tigers wanted as James Stefan opened the scoring 13:11 in right after Tigers goalie Beckett Langkow (Fort, Saskatchewan, AB) made a handful of saves on a Portland Power Play to make 1-0 Winterhawks. Portland will dig into their just over three minutes later as Luca Cagnoni snuck in behind the Tiger defense to make 2-0 after 1 for the Winterhawks at 16:48.

Off to the second as the Tigers would counter on a turnover and Tomas Mrsic (Surrey, BC) picked the pocket of Marek Alscher to cut the Portland lead to 2-1 at 5:02. But the Winterhawks regained their lead at 12:48 as Josh Zakreski made it 3-1 on a feed from Jack O'Brien.

Cue the comeback for Medicine Hat who had ample opportunities early in the final frame but it would be the final 2:36 of regulation that they would capitalize on as Alex Drover (Port-aux Basque, NL) takes a feed from Dru Krebs (Okotoks, AB) to make it 3-2 Winterhawks as he beats Dante Giannuzzi below the blocker on the far side. Then with the extra attacker, the Tigers make it 3-3 thanks to a blast from Brenden Lee (Seattle, WA) and Dallon Melin (Czar, AB) gets his 1st of the season with 1:47 left in regulation to get the Tigers to overtime in Portland.

Chances on the 3 on 3 sudden death overtime with happen at both ends of the ice including a partial Krebs break-away that just missed inches away from completing the comeback for Medicine Hat but it was Kyle Chyzowski on a break-away of his own beating Langkow and securing the extra point in the win for Portland.

The Tigers record now stands at 2-2-1 on the season and are now 1-0-1 on the US Division road trip picking up three of a possible four points in the process. Medicine Hat was perfect on the penalty kill going 2/2 but didn't register a single power play in the game.

Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Kent, WA and an encounter with the 2022 Western Conference Champion Seattle Thunderbirds on Tuesday Night.

You can catch the game live on the home of the Tigers Wild 94.5 with Gino De Paoli starting with the Pre-Game Show at 7:45 PM.
