Johnstown Chiefs News Release
CINCINNATI, Oh. - The Johnstown Chiefs defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones at U.S. Bank Arena by a score of 4-3 on Thursday evening to pick up their first win of the season.
Before most of the fans at U.S. Bank Arena could get comfortable in their seats the Chiefs had raced out to a 2-0 advantage. Jarrett Konkle posted his first of the season with a wicked wrist shot that beat Cyclones' goalie Jeremy Smith to the glove side. Konkle's goal was scored at 3:01 of the first with the assist going to Troy Schwab. One minute and thirty three seconds later Dan Collins cashed in his second goal of the season with Ryan Menei and David Schulz assisting. Schwab provided a bit more insurance with his first pro goal at 14:45 with help from Mike Bartlett and Konkle.
In the second period, Cincinnati shook off its rocky start and answered the Chiefs' three goals with three of their own. Scott Reynolds scored on a power play at 5:17 of the second to put the Cyclones on the board against rookie goalie Shane Connelly. Momentum didn't completely change hands until Cincinnati killed of back-to-back Johnstown power plays including 37 seconds of a 5-on-3. After that effort Mark O'Leary and Bryan Leitch scored 4:57 apart to knot the game at three.
The Chiefs had played well in the third period for a majority of the early portion of this season but always seemed to be a bit snakebitten. That would not be the case this night, though, as Greg Gallagher broke through for his second goal of the season at 4:04. Sliding down from the point, Gallagher took a crisp rink-wide pass from Konkle and laced the onetimer past Smith. Jim McKenzie added an assist to extend his point streak to four games.
Connelly made Gallagher's goal stand up as he made 25 saves in picking up his first pro victory. The Chiefs went 0-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Mark your calendars! The Chiefs are back on home ice on Wednesday, November 11 against the Reading Royals at 7:35 p.m. There will be a special pregame ceremony to honor military veterans and the Chiefs will be wearing special camouflage jerseys that will be auctioned off live immediately following the game. The Chiefs are also offering $5 tickets to all active military and military veterans through advance purchase. Great seats are still available and you can get yours by going to www.johnstownchiefs.com or by calling 1-800-TICKETMASTER.
