Spokane Chiefs News Release
Victoria, B.C. - For the second night in a row, the Spokane Chiefs dropped a contest to the Victoria Royals in overtime (4-3).
This time, it was the Royals who jumped out to a 2-0 lead, starting with a power play goal by Nate Misskey at 9:13 in the first period, followed by a Ben Riche goal at the 6:02 mark in the middle frame.
The Chiefs answered with three goals of their own within the last six minutes of the period. It started with Spokane capitalizing on a man advantage as Berkly Catton slid the puck from the right circle to a net-front Ty Cheveldayoff, who pushed it over the line and into the twine to make it a one-goal game at 2-1, Victoria. Defenseman Brayden Crampton also earned an assist on the play - his first of two points on the. night and his 12th of the season.
Overage forward Conner Roulette, who was playing in his 200th Western Hockey League career game tonight, took advantage of another power play as he flipped a puck from behind the net over goaltender Jayden Kraus' split legs, where it bounced off a Victoria skater and into the net for a game-tying goal. Catton and Crampton each notched their second assists of the night on the play.
With 50 seconds left to go in the second period, Lukas Kral (assists for Chase Harrington and Will McIsaac) added a third goal for Spokane to take a 3-2 lead going into the final break.
The Chiefs couldn't hold on, though, as the Royals forced overtime for the second night in a row with a power play goal by Robin Sapousek with just over 40 seconds left in the game. Sapousek also went on to score the game-winning goal in the extra frame at the 4:31 mark.
Dawson Cowan stopped 23 of 27 Victoria shots, while Spokane posted 34 shots on the other end of the ice.
The Chiefs went 2-for-8 on the power play and 5-for-7 on the penalty kill.
Up next, the Chiefs will cap their three-game road trip with a contest against the Vancouver Giants Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
