Chiefs Finish Pre-Season Schedule

September 11, 2008 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release

The only thing standing in the way of the Chiefs and the regular season is a pair of pre-season game against the Kelowna Rockets in a home-and-home series this weekend. Friday night, the Rockets will visit Eagles Ice-A-Rena at 7:00 before Spokane, 3-2 on the pre-season, rounds out their seven game schedule on Saturday in Kelowna.

"I don't mind having two more games at this point," Chiefs Head Coach Hardy Sauter said. "After our two games last weekend, I thought we could be ready to go but after a week of practice there are probably more things that we need to work on before the season begins."

Tickets are currently on sale at the Chiefs office or at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

The Chiefs will go into the weekend minus five veterans who will be attending pro camps; Dustin Tokarski (Tampa Bay), Mitch Wahl (Calgary), Justin Falk (Minnesota), Jared Spurgeon (New York Islanders) and Tyler Johnson (Phoenix). The Chiefs are also without Ondrej Roman. Drayson Bowman and Justin McCrae will leave for Carolina's camp later in the month.

For Sauter, "The message is simple," to the veterans. "Work hard, learn what you can and have as much fun as possible. No body can see the future. You should, and better, put some worth to the experience along, good or bad."

The departures will leave 23 players on the roster going into the weekend, which Sauter will use to his benefit, "It allows us to work on things in practice that the veterans have seen before and gives the younger players more reps in helps them catch on in a shorter amount of time."
