June 30, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs selected 18-year-old Danish forward Niklas Andersen with the 26th overall pick in the 2015 CHL Import Draft on Tuesday morning.
Andersen, from Esbjerg, Denmark, scored 11 goals and 7 assists in 36 games with the Esbjerg Energy in the Metal Ligaen, Denmark's premier hockey league. Esbjerg was the runner-up in the 2015 Metal Ligaen Championship. Andersen also played 9 games with the Danish U18 team and competed in the IIHF U18 World Championship Division I Group A.
"We are excited with our pick," said Chiefs General Manager Tim Speltz. "We expect Niklas to be an offensive player for us. He has speed, a great shot, plays physical and has good offensive instincts.
"Niklas' experience playing in Denmark including time in the men's league (Metal Ligaen) should help him with the adjustment to hockey in North America. We have great reports on Niklas and we're looking forward to seeing him at (Chiefs Annual) Fall Camp."
Andersen stands 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds. With his November 20 birthday, Andersen will be eligible for the NHL Draft beginning in 2016. He joins Austrian forward Dominic Zwerger as the Chiefs' two allowed European import players heading into the 2015-16 regular season.
The Spokane Chiefs open the 2015-16 regular season with Bud Light Opening Night on Saturday, September 26 at Spokane Arena. Ticket packages are on sale now and start as low as $110. For more information, stop by the Chiefs' Ticket Office in-person on the southeast corner of Spokane Arena, call (509) 535-PUCK or visit www.spokanechiefs.com.
