June 30, 2015 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Medicine Hat Tigers News Release
The Medicine Hat Tigers made one selection in today's CHL Import Draft, picking Russian-born defenceman Alexei Platonov in the 1st round, 53rd overall.
Platonov is a big, mobile defender, standing 6'5" tall and weighing 203 lbs. The native of Mytischi, Russia has suited up internationally at both the U-17 and U-18 world championsihps, competing at the Hlinka Memorial last year, which saw Tigers GM and Head Coach Shaun Clouston on the bench for Canada.
"We've touched base with Alexei, and he's got a good command of the English language which is a positive. We're looking forward to seeing him at our camp in August and he's looking forward to competing at it," said Tigers Senior Director of Player Personnel Darren Kruger.
A recent scouting report from the HockeyBuzz.com blog had the following to say about Alexei:
"Alexei Platonov : Big rangy defender from Atlanty Mytischi, I've seen him play once and he is a really mean puck mover. He has a really hard and accurate slap shot and gets it off very quickly. Already he has 2 goals and an assist in the first 6 games and is one of the best young defenseman in the MHL."
The Tigers have bolstered their defensive core in both numbers and size in recent days, with Monday's acquisition of 6'6" d-man Tamas Laday from Spokane and now the selection of 6'5" Alexei Platonov today.
The Tigers welcome Alexei and fans of the Orange & Black can get their first look at the big defenceman come Training Camp later this summer!
