Cheppenko, Homers Lift Birds past Saints

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (14-14) started their weekend series defeating the St. Paul Saints (17-10) by a score of 3-1 in front of 3,546 fans at the Birdcage on Friday night.

The Saints were the first to score, getting on the board in the top of the second inning. Brian Sprout hit his seventh home run of the year to put the Saints up 1-0.

The Canaries evened up the score in the bottom of the fourth inning. James Shanks doubled and came around to score on a two-out double by Ben Van Iderstine, tying the game, 1-1.

The Birds took the lead in the fifth inning thanks to Orlando Miller hitting his fifth homer of the season. Miller's homer gave the Canaries a 2-1 advantage.

In the home half of the eighth, Trevor Lawhorn gave the Birds an insurance run. Lawhorn hit his seventh home run of the year putting the Canaries up by the final score, 3-1.

Kevin Cheppenko (6-4) won for his third start in a row. Cheppenko pitched seven innings holding the Saints to one run on two hits. Justin Lord (3-3) suffered the loss despite pitching a complete game for the Saints. Jerrod Fuell earned his 19th save of the year, making him the club's single-season save leader.

The Canaries and Saints duel in the middle game of the series on Saturday. The first 500 kids 12 and under will receive a backpack courtesy of Dasani.
