St. Paul Saints News Release

SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 3, 2007) - It was good news, bad news for the St. Paul Saints on Friday night at Sioux Falls Stadium. The good news is they got great starting pitching from Justin Lord, the bad news is they had absolutely no offense losing 3-1 to the Sioux Falls Canaries.

Lord hurled a complete game, going 8.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven, but his counterpart, Kevin Cheppenko, went 7.0 innings allowing one run on two hits while walking four and striking out five.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo homer from Brian Sprout, his seventh of the season. Sprout would single in the fifth inning, the only two hits given up by Cheppenko.

Lord gave up the tying run in the fourth when James Shanks doubled to left-center with one out and with two outs Ben Van Iderstine doubled him home.

In the fifth inning former Major Leaguer Orlando Miller hit a solo homer over the left field wall, his fifth of the season, to give the Canaries a 2-1 lead. They tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a solo homer from Trevor Lawhorn, his seventh of the season.

Jerrod Fuel got his league leading 19th save of the season and after giving up a one out single to Adam Olow in the ninth, struck out Marcel Longmire and got Sprout to ground out to second.

The same two teams meet Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send their newest member of the team, RHP Alec Shepherd to mound who was 5-1, 3.20 with the St. Joseph Blacksnakes. He will be opposed by RHP Jeff Landing (6-2, 3.54). The game can be heard on KBGY 107.5 FM.
