Explorers Take Opener from Diablos, 6-2

Robert Wooley threw seven innings striking out nine as the Sioux City Explorers defeated the El Paso Diablos 6-2 in the series opener at Lewis and Clark Park on Friday night.

The Explorers took the early lead in the bottom of the second. Brandon Jones led off the inning with a solo-homer to deep left field, his second shot in three games. Paul Weichard singled the next at-bat. He would eventually score on a suicide squeeze from third base, for the 2-0 Explorers lead.

The Diablos knotted it up the very next inning. Robert Wooley gave up a lead off single to Evan Conley, and walked two batters to load the bases. Jorge Alvarez came through with a two-RBI single to tie up the game at two.

The Explorers went ahead in the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Jones hit his second home-run of the game to lead off the frame for the 3-2 lead.

Sioux City would take a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Shea Harris was hit by pitch to lead off the frame. Ray Navarro then dropped down a bunt which the catcher Matt Kent bobbled for the error allowing Navarro to reach first and moving Harris to second. Jason Tuttle then put down a bunt which Josh Neitz threw into right field allowing two runs to score. Tuttle would speed to third base on the throwing error. An RBI single by Jake Daubert plated Tuttle completing the three run inning.

Robert Wooley (1-1) gets the win as he threw seven full allowing two earned runs off of four hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.

Josh Neitz (6-4) takes the loss as he threw six innings allowing four earned runs off of 11 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

Garvis Romero tossed two scoreless innings of relief for El Paso.

The Diablos will play Sioux City in the second game of the series at 6:05 PM (MST) on Saturday night at Lewis and Clark Park. Mike Cervera will match up against Brian Buchanan. The game will be broadcast live at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
