Checkers Knock Off Atlantic City 4-1

Charlotte, NC - Friday, January 24, 2003: The Charlotte Checkers opend up a three-game homestand with a convincing 4-1 win over the first place Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies Friday night at Cricket Arena. David Evans scored the game-winning goal and added an assist while Kenton Smith, Takahito Suzuki and Brandon Cullen each chipped in with two assists. Goalie Scott Meyer was superb in winning his eighth game of the season stopping 33 of 34 Atlantic City shots. The only goal he yielded was a Bullies power play goal in the second period when Atlantic City had a two-man advantage.

"It all starts with goaltending and Scott had another great game for us tonight," remarked Checkers Head Coach Don MacAdam. "He made some real key saves in the first period and we got two nice goals for a 2-0 first period lead against a very good Atlantic City team. Our second line also played great tonight and when they get a couple of goals for us, there's a good chance we're going to win."

"We really wanted to come out after the All-Star break and really get off to a great start," said Kenton Smith. "It was great tonight to get a big win, especially against a good team like Atlantic City."

The Checkers took a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Walker McDonald and Evans, and then increased their lead to 3-0 on a Vince Malts tip in at 11:54 of the seond period. The Bullies Kevin Colley finally got Atlantic City on the board with a power play goal at 18:04 of the second period, as the Checkers took a 3-1 lead to the locker room after two periods of play. An Allan Egeland power play goal at 8:57 of the final period served as some final insurance for Charlotte in the 4-1 final.

The Checkers improved to 20-19-2 for 42 points while the Bullies fell to 26-9-9 for 61 points. Charlotte will continue its' three-game homestand Saturday night when they'll host the Roanoke Express at 7:35 p.m. at Cricket Arena.
