Checkers Announce 2008-09 Schedule

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers announced today the release of their 2008-09 schedule. The announcement was made by Jeff Longo, president of the Checkers, from the team's office on Tryon Street.
The first game of the season will take place on the road against the Florida Everblades on Friday Oct. 17. The home opener will take place on Saturday, Nov. 1 at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Time Warner Cable Arena when they battle the Everblades once again. The Checkers will get a rematch against the team that ousted them from the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs last season when they take on the Gwinnett on Sunday, Dec. 7 in Gwinnett.
The Checkers will play 72 games during the regular season spanning from October 17, 2008 to April 3, 2009. The Checkers return to play 36 home games at Time Warner Cable Arena and 36 games on the road. The Checkers noted that their schedule is likely to undergo some revisions when the official NBA schedule is released later this summer.
"Once again, as in seasons past, there will likely be date changes once the NBA schedule is released later this summer; however we are excited to have a base of dates that we can start working with to plan for next season," said Longo.
The home portion of the schedule is highlighted by 11 Saturday's, 12 Friday's and four Sunday dates. The team's longest home-stand takes place from Sunday, March 1 thru Friday March 13 where the team will play seven consecutive games at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Time Warner Cable Arena. The longest road stretch starts off the season when the team begins in Florida to battle the Everblades on Oct. 17 and ends in Mississippi on Sunday, Oct. 26. The total length of the trip spans nine days and six games.
The Checkers are gearing up for their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
