Salmon Kings Announce 2008-09 Schedule
April 30, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced their 2008-09 regular season schedule today.
Victoria will open their season on October 17th in Phoenix versus the RoadRunners. The Salmon Kings will then return home where they will welcome the Bakersfield Condors for the home opener on October 24th.
The 2008-09 schedule will see Victoria go on a season long 11-game road trip that begins on February 11th and concludes on March 7th. The road trip is necessary as the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre will host the 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the Canadian Women's National Curling Championships.
The Salmon Kings will welcome the newest member of the National Conference, the Ontario Reign, to the Victoria for the first time on January 9th.
The Premier 'AA' Hockey League welcomed 3,756,191 fans, marking the fifth straight season and the 11th time in the last 12 years that it has exceeded 3.75 million fans. The 51 sold out crowds are the most in the last five seasons and mark the fourth time in the last five years that the ECHL has had at least 40 sellouts.
In the 2007-08 season the Salmon Kings had a West Division-leading total attendance of 175,354 for a club record average of 4,871 fans. It marked the third highest attendance increase in professional hockey with a 14.7% raise over the 2006-07 season.
The Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre had its second sellout crowd in history with 7,006 for its final regular season game against the Alaska Aces. That game not only saw the Salmon Kings clinch the first West Division title in team history, but also capped off a three-game series viewed by a club record 18,540 fans.
Beginning in 1988-89 with five teams playing in four states, the Premier 'AA' Hockey League has grown into a coast-to-coast league that will have 24 teams in 16 states and British Columbia playing 864 games from Oct. 17, 2008 to Apr. 4, 2009. Nineteen of the 24 teams have played at least five years in their current city.
The third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, the ECHL averaged 4,174 per game last season, marking the fourth year in row and the 16th time in the last 18 years that the league has averaged over 4,000 fans.
The conference and division alignments and the format for the 2009 Kelly Cup Playoffs will be determined and approved at a later date by the ECHL Board of Governors.

The Salmon Kings continue their 2008 Kelly Cup Playoff drive tomorrow evening when they face off for Game 3 of their National Conference Semi-Final Series against the Utah Grizzlies in Salt Lake City. The series continues on the weekend with Game 4 on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. PDT and Game 5 goes on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. PDT. If necessary the series will return to Victoria for Games 6 and 7 on Tuesday and Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m.
