Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Charlotte Checkers, in a joint effort with Emerson Joseph, announced today that on Wednesday, Nov. 7, and March 21, fans can save $5 on all regularly priced $20 Attack Zone tickets and a portion of each ticket will benefit the ALS division of the Charlotte MDA and the family of Fort Mill native, Brent Lewis in his fight with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).

For the game on Nov. 7, the majority of the proceeds will go directly to the Lewis family. Lewis is an avid hockey fan who was diagnosed with ALS in 2004. Over the past couple of months, Brent's speech has started to fail, which is at times preventing others from understanding him. Brent is getting a device that will speak for him. A portion of ticket sales from this game will go towards securing this device. To raise awareness about the upcoming event, Checkers staff members Rory Brady and Jon Rathbun, Season Ticket Holder Aaron Harvey, and Checkers forward Nathan Gillies will be "Rocking the Mohawk". The March 21 game will go to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, specifically ALS research.

"As much as this is a fundraiser it is also a celebration of Brent and his family," said Brady, "Their strength and positive attitude are an inspiration to anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting them."

ALS is a rapidly progressive disease that attacks the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. Eventually, patients lose their strength and ability to move their arms, legs and body. When muscles in the diaphragm and chest wall fail, patients cannot breathe without a ventilator. Most people with ALS die from respiratory failure, usually within three to five years.
