Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
ROUND ROCK, TX - Omaha were held without a baserunner for 6 innings, rallied to tie the game in the 7th, then saw Round Rock regain the lead immediately in a 6-4 defeat on Wednesday night at the Dell Diamond.
Round Rock opened the scoring in the bottom of the 3rd inning; Juan Centeno doubled, Drew Robinson singled, and Scott Heineman singled to plate Centeno. Later in the inning, Willie Calhoun scored Robinson with a single, giving the Express a 2-0 lead.
Drew Robinson started a run-scoring rally in the bottom of the 5th, drawing a walk, taking 2nd on a wild pitch, advancing to 3rd on a fly ball, and scoring on a single by Tommy Joseph to make it 3-0 Round Rock.
Glenn Sparkman pitched 6 innings for Omaha; he yielded 3 runs, 6 hits, with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.
The Chasers offense, meanwhile, was held without a baserunner for 6 innings, as Round Rock starter Adrian Sampson retired the first 18 batters he faced.
In the top of the 7th, however, Donnie DeWees broke up the perfect game bid with a leadoff home run, cutting the deficit to 3-1. With 1 out, Jorge Bonifacio singled, ending Sampson's night. Brandon Mann (W, 3-0) entered, and promptly served up a 2-run homer to Ryan O'Hearn, tying the game at 3.
Sampson was charged with 2 runs on 2 hits over 6.1 frames; he struck out 3 and walked none.
Round Rock regained their 3-run lead in the bottom of the 7th, as Sam Selman (L, 0-1) allowed a walk and a single, and was lifted in favor of Jake Newberry with 2 out in the inning. Tommy Joseph greeted Newberry with a 3-run homer, putting the Express ahead 6-3.
R.J. Alvarez closed the game for Round Rock, notching his 15th save. The Chasers didn't go quietly; Billy Burns bunted for a hit, Jorge Bonifacio reached on a 3rd strike wild pitch, and with 1 out, Paulo Orlando doubled to make it 6-4. But Alvarez rallied to retire the final 2 batters and strand the tying runs in scoring position.
The Storm Chasers (35-41) will conclude the series in Round Rock tomorrow night at 7:05. Omaha will send LHP Jon Dziedzic (3-6, 3.97) to the mound, while the Express will counter with LHP David Hurlbut (2-5, 4.83) to the mound.
