Charlotte Checkers News Release

Columbia, SC - The Checkers traveled to Columbia for their first road game of the season and were looking for their third win of the year.

In the first period, Checkers defenseman Ryan Constant found a loose puck just inside the Checkers zone and led a charge down the ice burying a shot behind Inferno goaltender, Jeff Jakaitis at 3:29. The first period ended with a 1-0 Checkers advantage and with netminder, Daniel Manzato making several excellent saves in his first game donning a Charlotte jersey.

Later in the second, forward Joe Barnes swooped in after a miscue between Jakaitis and his defensemen and fired the puck into the empty net giving the Checkers a two goal lead at 7:36. The Inferno would fight back and it was a shot from nearly 60 feet by defenseman Bryan Rodney that beat Manzato at 16:51.

In the final period, Checkers center, Mike Oullette and Inferno forward, Mac Faulkner would trade goals but Columbia wasn't able to mount a comeback after Ouellette scored his second of the period into an empty net at 18:45. Nathan Gillies would follow up with another empty netter 59 seconds later and the Checkers would win by a score of 5-2.

Notes: Daniel Manzato made his North American professional debut stopping 33 of 35 shots...Jakaitis turned aside 20 of 23...Neither team was able to score a power play goal. Charlotte had four attempts while Columbia had five...

The Checkers are in their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Their next home game takes place on Nov. 7 against the South Carolina Stingrays. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three consecutive playoff appearances to date.
