Alaska Aces News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - Tomas Kana forced overtime by tipping in Peter Metcalf's drive from the point with 6:57, left in regulation, but Stockton eventually prevailed 3-2 in OT before 8,609 Saturday at Stockton Arena.
As has been their habit in previous trips to Stockton, the Aces dug themselves an early hole, surrendering two goals in the final 61 seconds of the opening period. Geoff Paukovich scored on his own rebound at 18:59, and 40 seconds later, Jesse Bennefield picked off a pass and beat Alaska starter Derek Gustafson on the ensuing breakaway.
The deficit remained 2-0 until the final minute of the second period, when a holding penalty against Bennefield resulted in a power play goal by Bo Cheesman with just 17 seconds left in the frame, his second marker in as many nights, leaving the score 2-1 in favor of the Thunder at the break. The Aces fired 14 shots in a furious third period rally, marked by relentless pressure on the forecheck and capped by Kana's equalizer. But in overtime, Andy Contois broke out on a two-on-one feathered a backhand centering pass to David Rohlfs, who buried the winner at 2:04. Alaska out-shot Stockton 36-27 and killed all seven Thunder power plays.
With the road trip complete, the Aces shift their focus to unbeaten Florida (3-0), which arrives in Anchorage to open a three-game series next Friday at 7:15 p.m. The teams play again Saturday at 7:15 and Sunday, November 4, at 5:05 p.m., followed by the traditional post-game Fred Meyer "Skate with the Aces." All regular season games will be broadcast live on Alaska's flagship station, AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
