Florida Everblades News Release
BEAUMONT, TX - The Florida Everblades (3-1-0) suffered their first loss of the season after being up-ended 5-3 by the Texas Wildcatters (2-1-1) on Sunday night at Ford Arena in front of a sparse crowd of 1,257.
The Wildcatters opened the game's scoring with a power play goal 9:53 into the first period when former Everblade John McNabb banged a rebound past Everblades goaltender Tyler Plante for the 1-0 lead. The power play goal was the first allowed by the Everblades after killing off the first 21 attempts against them.
Texas shortly after opened a 2-0 lead when Danick Bouchard was able to slip a shot between the pads of Plante at 14:22, but the Everblades responded by trimming the lead in half with less than two minutes left in the opening period. Brad Zancanaro began the play with a shot from the right circle that Texas net-minder Peter Aubry stopped, but the rebound kicked to his right where Jon Lehun skated onto it and chipped it into the net with 1:51 remaining. The goal was Lehun's second of the season.
For the second straight period, Texas outscored the Everblades 2-1 to hold a 4-2 advantage after two periods. Riley Emmerson notched his first goal of the season just 5:24 into the middle period with a delayed penalty coming against the Everblades. Florida recovered once more to cut the Texas lead to one when Jordan Henry tallied his first professional goal with the Everblades on the power play a 16:28. Jarret Lukin and Brandon Roach picked up the assists on the tally. Texas however once again regained a two-goal lead just over a minute later when Dan Welch collected the Wildcatters' second power play goal of the night with 2:31 remaining in the frame.
Early in the third period the Everblades once again cut the Texas lead down to one when Matt Melanson notched his team-leading fourth goal of the season at 3:27 when he backhanded a shot from the right circle over the glove of Aubry and under the crossbar to make it a 4-3 game. The Everblades put pressure on in the closing moments, but couldn't find the equalizer and Texas sealed the win with an empty net goal by Ross Carlson with 38 seconds remaining in the contest.
Plante suffered the loss in his first start as an Everblade, allowing four goals on 42 shots, while Aubry picked up his first win as a Wildcatter by stopping 22 of 25 Everblades shots.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out night 1-for-6, while the Wildcatters tallied finishd 2-for-9 on the power play.
