Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - The Charlotte Knights scored in four of the first five innings and added a six-run seventh inning to rout the Gwinnett Braves, 11-2 on Saturday night at Coolray Field. Right-hander Todd Redmond surrendered five runs, four earned over 5.0 innings in the loss. Five-different Knights drove in multiple runs, including Tyler Kuhn, who went 1-for-4 with three RBI.
Redmond hit Kuhn to lead off the game and yielded a two-run homer to the very next batter, Dan Johnson. Johnson's sixth blast of the year established a 2-0 lead for the Knights.
An RBI single by Jim Gallagher in the second, RBI fielder's choice by Ozzie Martinez in the fourth and RBI single by Hector Gimenez in the fifth added to the damage against Redmond as Charlotte stormed out to a 5-1 lead. Redmond (L, 2-3) allowed six hits and walked two, failing to strike out a batter for the first time this season.
The Knights put the game away with a six-run seventh inning that saw three Gwinnett relievers take the mound. Kuhn's three-run triple off left-hander Dusty Hughes highlighted a frame that saw Charlotte send 10 batters to the plate and exit with an 11-1 lead. Hughes was touched up for three runs in the inning, while right-hander Anthony Varvaro also surrendered three.
Left-hander Charlie Leesman (W, 2-3) picked up the win with 6.0 innings of one-run baseball for the Knights. The lefty allowed an RBI single to Stefan Gartrell in the third, but just three other hits on the outing. Right-handers Brian Omogrosso and Anthony Carter combined to allow a run over the final 3.0 innings in relief of Leesman.
Kuhn led the way with three RBI for Charlotte, while Johnson, Gimenez, Gallagher and Martinez all drove in two runs each.
Jose Constanza went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the losing cause for Gwinnett. Gartrell and Joey Terdoslavich each plated runs with RBI singles. Luis Durango finished 1-for-4 with a run scored and two stolen bases.
The Gwinnett Braves (18-10) and Charlotte Knights (15-14) close out the two-game series at Coolray Field on Sunday afternoon, first pitch scheduled for 2:05 PM. Right-hander Jair Jurrjens (0-0, 1.29) will start for the G-Braves, while right-hander Terry Doyle (1-2, 4.13) is scheduled to start for the Knights.
