HELLO AND GOODBYE: The Rochester Red Wings tonight play a doubleheader against the Buffalo Bisons (Mets), a 2-game series that was shortened to one day due to the Empire State Yankees game tomorrow at Frontier Field. The Wings just wrapped up a 2-5 roadtrip, getting swept in a rain-shortened 3-game series at Buffalo and splitting a 4-game set against the Yankees at Frontier Field. After an offday tomorrow, it's back on the road for an 8-game roadtrip that includes stops at Pawtucket (Red Sox) and Syracuse (Nationals).
ANDY'S DANDY: The Red Wings on Thursday announced that the Empire State Yankees game vs. Pawtucket in Batavia tomorrow has been moved to Frontier Field in Rochester. Game time is 2:05 p.m. and gates open at 12:30 p.m. Tomorrow's Red Wings game vs. Buffalo will now be played as part of a doubleheader tonight at 5:05 p.m. at Frontier Field. Tonight's doubleheader will feature two 7-innning games. The move was made to accommodate Andy Pettitte, who has rejoined the Yankees after returning from retirement.
BASEBALL MONTH IN ROCHESTER: The Red Wings and Monroe County have proclaimed May as "Baseball Month in Rochester." Frontier Field is hosting games on 26 of the 31 days in the month, as the Empire State Yankees use the downtown ballpark as a temporary home while PNC Field in Moosic, PA undergoes a season-long renovation. Tonight at the ballpark:
aHosted organization in suite: Reality Check, a teenager-run anti-tobacco effort at local schools
aSpikes and Mittsy appearance: Victor Little League and Fairport Little League
aRaffle items: Joe Mauer autographed and framed Sports Illustrated cover, Mookie Wilson autographed photo, Brian Dozier autographed baseball, Brandon Laird autographed baseball
I COULD USE MORE OF THIS: By winning the final 2 games of their 4-game series against the Empire State Yankees at Frontier Field, the Red Wings have won back-to-back games for the first time since April 20-22 vs. Lehigh Valley (Phillies). With the 2 victories, Rochester has also yet to alternate wins and losses at any point this season.
aWith last night's 3-0 win, the Red Wings posted their first shutout since the first game of an August 26, 2011 doubleheader at Syracuse, a 2-0 triumph. Rochester last night posted its first shutout in a 9-inning game since August 7, 2011 at Norfolk (Orioles), an 8-0 victory. Last night's shutout win was also the first at Frontier Field since the combined no-hitter July 6, 2011, a 7-0 triumph vs. Lehigh Valley.
ROSTER INFO: The Minnesota Twins yesterday announced that infielder Sean Burroughs cleared waivers and accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A Rochester. Burroughs, a left-handed-hitting infielder, will wear No. 33. He batted .118 (2-for-17) with a double and an RBI in 10 games (3 starts) with the Twins, including a 1-for-7 mark (.143) as a pinch-hitter.
aIncluding Burroughs, the Red Wings have employed the services of 31 players, including 17 position players and 14 pitchers. Only 2 Red Wings have been recalled to the Twins one month into the season: Drew Butera and Ben Revere, who has since returned to Rochester. One year ago today, the Twins had already recalled 10 players.
HORSING AROUND: The Red Wings tonight play a doubleheader against Buffalo on Kentucky Derby Saturday. The Wings lost 6-3 vs. Gwinnett (Braves) on Derby Saturday last year as Animal Kingdom ran for the roses. Rochester last won on a Kentucky Derby Saturday in 2010, a 1-0 triumph vs. Durham (Rays) as Super Saver won at Churchill Downs. The Wings are 6-8 on days of the Kentucky Derby beginning in 2000.
aSome notable horses that recently raced in the Kentucky Derby include Mine That Bird, the 2009 winner; High Fly, which finished 10th in the 2005 Derby; and Birdstone, which finished 8th in the 2004 Derby.
MEET ME IN MARGARITAVILLE: The Red Wings tonight are looking for their 3rd straight win on Cinco de Mayo, a stretch that dates to 2009 (the team didn't play on May 5 in 2010). The Wings won 3-2 vs. Gwinnett (Braves) last year and 13-9 at Louisville (Reds) in 2009. Rochester lost 4 of their previous 5 Cinco de Mayo matchups.
aThe Red Wings and Bisons are getting together on Cinco de Mayo for the first time since 2004, when the Wings pulled out a 3-2 win in 10 innings at Coca-Cola Field.
LET'S RE-LIVE THAT OPENING DAY MAGIC: Since scoring a season-high 7 runs on Opening Day, April 5 at Syracuse, the Red Wings have been held to 5 runs or less in each of their last 26 games. In the 5 contests they've scored at least 5 runs, the Wings are 4-1. They are 7-15 in their other 22 games.
aThe Red Wings have scored an International League-low 81 runs, 16 fewer than the next closest team: Lehigh Valley with 97. The league leader is Toledo (Tigers), which has plated 147 runs.
D'OH!!: The Red Wings have gone a season-high 5 straight games without a home run for the 2nd time, matching their drought from April 14-18. Rochester's last homer came from Joe Benson last Saturday in a 4-3 loss at Buffalo. The Wings are 2-3 in the last 5 games.
aThe Red Wings last went 6 games in a row without a homer during an 8-game drought May 24-June 1, 2010. The team went 2-6 during that stretch, which ended when Brock Peterson homered June 2 vs. Norfolk (Orioles) of Troy Patton.
aThe Red Wings have hit a league-low 10 home runs, one fewer than the next closest team Indianapolis (Pirates) with 11.
