Charlotte Knights News Release
(Lawrenceville, GA) - Charlie Leesman threw six solid innings for the Charlotte Knights on Saturday and the team's offense stole the show against the team with the top record in the International League's South Division.
The Knights belted out 11 runs on 10 hits including two triples in a six-run seventh inning and beat the Gwinnett Braves by a score of 11-2 on Saturday night in game one of their two-game series from Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA.
A night after their game was suspended due to inclement weather, the Knights made the trek to Gwinnett with a chance to gain some ground on the first place team in the South Division. They would do just that.
Charlotte slugger Dan Johnson continued his impressive road trip. The former 2010 International League MVP hit his fifth home run in seven days in the first inning of Saturday's game. His two-run blast came off of Gwinnett starter Todd Redmond (2-3, 3.69) and it put the Knights on the scoreboard early.
Eventually, Johnson's home run on Saturday will go down as his sixth of the road trip. He also homered in Friday's suspended game, but that one won't be factored into his statistics until that game is completed at Knights Stadium later this month. He currently has six home runs on the season.
Every starter in the Knights lineup reached base on Saturday. Hector Gimenez and Jim Gallagher each had two hits in Saturday's contest.
Charlotte (15-14) had their best inning of the ninth in the seventh when they put up six runs. Outfielder Greg Golson and Tyler Kuhn each tripled in the inning and Kuhn's triple came with the bases loaded. He finished the game 1-4 with a run scored and three RBIs.
Leesman (2-3, 3.21) allowed just one run on four hits over six innings to halt a personal two-game losing streak. The win was his first in four starts on the road this season and it was the second win of his Triple-A career. He walked two and struck-out two.
Charlotte and Gwinnett will complete their series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. RHP Terry Doyle (1-2, 4.13) is scheduled to get the nod for the Knights, while the Braves will counter with Jair Jurrjens (0-0, 1.29). After the game, Charlotte will return home to Knights Stadium to open an eight-game homestand on Monday, May 7.
