Pawtucket Takes Series Opener by 9-3 Score over Yankees

Rochester, NY - The Pawtucket Red Sox scored at least one run in each of the first four innings at Dwyer Stadium in Batavia, including a five-run second inning to take game one of a quick two game series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by a score of 9-3.

Pawtucket wasted no time getting on the board, as Daniel Nava gave the Red Sox the 1-0 lead with an RBI double down the right field line.

The Red Sox opened the floodgates in the top half of the fourth inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Che-Hsuan Lin started the hitting spree with a two-run homer over the left field wall. Nava then chipped in with his second RBI of the day with a pop single to short left field. Lars Anderson continued the offensive explosion with a two-RBI double with two outs in the inning., extending the Red Sox lead to 6-0.

The Red Sox weren't done yet as they added another run in the top of the third when Mike Rivera scored from third on a wild pitch out of the hands of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Nelson Figueroa.

Pawtucket extended its lead to 8-0 in the top half of the fourth inning. Anderson roped a double off the wall, which brought Scranton/Wilkes-Barre manager Dave Miley to the hill to make the call to the bullpen. Miley called on left-hander Mike O'Connor to face Mauro Gomez with Anderson on second and two outs in the inning. Gomez made him pay with an RBI screaming single down the third baseline.

The Yankees got on the board for the first time in the last 19 innings when Francisco Cervelli drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of sixth inning. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre failed to score another run as Cole Garner struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Gomez responded in the top of the seventh with a solo blast way over the left field wall to give the Red Sox the 9-1 lead.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre picked up its second run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Yadil Mujica scored on a sacrifice fly to right-center off the bat of Colin Curtis.

Francisco Cervelli showed some power in the bottom of the eighth inning when he roped an RBI double to the centerfield wall allowing Ronnier Mustselier to score from first. The Cervelli double brought the Yankees to within 9-3.

Brandon Duckworth was afforded the luxury of never having to pitch from behind and he used it to his advantage. The right-hander threw 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run en route to his fourth win of the season. He allowed just five hits, while striking out seven and walking one. Figueroa suffered his first loss of the season. He went just 3 2/3 innings allowing eight runs on eight hits, while striking out two and walking two.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Pawtucket will wrap up the two game series tomorrow afternoon in Rochester. Veteran New York Yankee lefty Andy Pettitte gets the ball as he continues his comeback trail. Doug Mathis (0-2, 7.17) gets the nod for Pawtucket. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM from Frontier Field.
