Owens Named Tribe's April Player of the Month

May 5, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- Starting pitcher Rudy Owens has been named the Indianapolis Indians' Player of the Month for April. He will accept the award - a custom-made watch courtesy of Windsor Jewelry - before tonight's home contest against the Louisville Bats.

Despite earning just a single victory, Owens was spectacular over his four starts in the month of April, posting a 2.08 ERA (6 ER in 26.0 IP), 0.77 WHIP and amazing 19-to-one strikeout-to-walk ratio. The lefthander's ERA was tied for the seventh-best in the International League during the month, while his league-best WHIP was also tied for the ninth-best in all of minor league baseball.

Owens' excellent control also made him one of only two pitchers in the IL to have at least 19 strikeouts and only one walk during the month. He was a model of consistency, going exactly seven innings in each of his final three starts in April, while finishing with 17.2 straight scoreless innings.

As of May 3, Owens is 1-0 with a 2.12 ERA (8 ER in 34.0 IP) with 26 strikeouts and only two walks over 34 innings pitched. The southpaw is no stranger to earning awards as he was named the Pittsburgh Pirates Minor League Pitcher of the Year following the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

The Indians begin a season-long 10-game homestand tonight at 7:05 p.m. against the Bats. Tickets for all ten contests are available by going online to IndyIndians.com, calling the Indians single-game ticket hotline at 317-269-2282 or by visiting the Victory Field Box Office open daily at 501 West Maryland Street.
