June 22, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Charlotte FC News Release
CHARLOTTE, NC - Charlotte FC today announced the Club has signed midfielder Scott Arfield to a contract through 2024 with an option for the 2025 season.
The move is pending receipt of a P-1 visa and ITC with the 34-year-old occupying an international roster slot.
Major League Soccer's secondary transfer window begins on July 5 and Arfield will be available for roster selection following the window opening.
Arfield, a former Canadian international, moves to Charlotte from Scottish giants Rangers FC, where the midfielder scored 43 goals and added 19 assists in 233 matches across all competitions. During his time in Glasgow, Rangers won both the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup.
He added 65 appearances in European football between the Champions League and Europa League. Arfield featured 12 times for Rangers during the club's 2021-22 Europa League run to the final against Eintracht Frankfurt.
"We're delighted to be signing a midfielder of Scott's caliber who joins Charlotte FC after a decorated career in Scotland and England. He's featured over 100 times for four different clubs which speaks to the quality and consistency Scott has shown throughout his playing career," said Sporting Director Zoran Krneta. "He brings a wealth of leadership experience in big matches to our dressing room, including three promotion-winning seasons in England, two trophies with Rangers, and a run to a European final. Scott is excited to join our Club for the next part of his career, and we look forward to him debuting for Charlotte FC following the opening of the secondary transfer window."
Before joining Rangers, Arfield was teammates with current Charlotte FC midfielder Ashley Westwood at Burnley FC. Arfield was instrumental in two promotion-winning sides and played 86 games for the Clarets in the Premier League. Between the English top flight and the second tier, Arfield amassed nearly 200 appearances for Burnley, where he scored 22 goals and contributed 12 assists.
Arfield's first stint in English football came at Huddersfield Town, where he helped promote the Terriers via the League One playoffs in 2012. The midfielder racked up over 100 appearances for Huddersfield throughout England's League One and Championship.
The Scottish-born playmaker began his career in the Falkirk youth setup and eventually graduated into the club's first team. At Falkirk, Arfield helped his boyhood club to a runners-up medal in the Scottish Cup which qualified Falkirk for European football for the first time in club history.
Arfield began his international career with his native Scotland and appeared for the U-19 and U-21s before filing a one-time switch to represent Canada, his father's home country. He played 19 times for Canada before retiring from international duty in 2022.
