Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
(Greensboro, NC) The Greensboro Grasshoppers are pleased to announce David Hall, Chase Jones, Alexandra Troxler and Tiffany Farley have been selected as recipients of the 2006 Charlie Harville Memorial Scholarship.
Established by the Greensboro Bats in August 2002, the Charlie Harville Memorial Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Charlie Harville, a long time sports legend and journalist in Greensboro. Charlie passed away in the winter of 2002, but loved baseball and was a great friend to the Grasshoppers organization.
This $1,000 scholarship will assist recipients to any four-year college or university of their choice and is based on a combination of athletic ability, academic achievement, and community service. It is available to senior baseball or softball players attending Guilford County High Schools that are recommended by their coaches.
David Hall, a Western Guilford High School senior, plans to attend University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in the fall and major in pharmacy. David served as captain of the baseball team and was selected to the 2005 All-Conference tournament team. In addition to his numerous club involvements and service to the community, he ranked in the top 10%of his graduating class.
Alexandra Troxler, a Northeast Guilford High School senior, will major in nutrition at North Carolina State University this fall. In addition to her strong commitment as captain of the softball team and president of both the Beta Club and Fellowship of Student Athletes, Alex ranked 2nd in her graduating class.
Chase Jones, a Lucy Ragsdale High School senior, will also attend University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, though his major is undecided. Ranked 4th in his class, Chase was a varsity letterman as well as team captain for his baseball squad. In addition to serving as the Student Body President and class representative while at Ragsdale, Chase also logged more than 700 hours improving the community.
Tiffany Farley, a Northwest Guilford High School senior, plans to study dentistry and attend Catawba College in the fall. She was selected to the National Honor Roll all four academic years and served as softball team captain for the past two. Tiffany will continue her athletics career at Catawba as a member of the Lady Indians softball team.
"It's an honor for us to be able to recognize the commitment and passion these students have demonstrated to their teachers, peers, teammates and communities," said Grasshoppers President Donald Moore. "They embody the term 'student-athlete' and should be extremely proud of their achievements."
The scholarships recipients will be honored June 16th at First Horizon Park during a pregame ceremony prior to the game between the Greensboro Grasshoppers and the Lexington Legends. First pitch of the game is scheduled for 7:00pm. For more ticket information, please contact the Grasshoppers office at 336.268.2255 or visit us online at www.gsohoppers.com.
