Hickory Crawdads News Release
The Hickory Crawdads tallied four times in the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to three Kannapolis errors and took the rubber game of a five game series with the Intimidators 8-6 in front of 3,805 fans Thursday night at L.P. Frans Stadium.
After the âDads got two runs in the second inning, the Intimidators tallied five times in the third against Crawdad starter Kyle Pearson. The Hickory right hander walked five in the inning including 3B Adam Ricks' base on balls with the bases full to get the Intimidators within 2-1. The next batter, SS Javier Castillo, got the first hit of the frame against Pearson, a grand slam homer, to give the I's a 5-2 lead.
Crawdad reliever Jean Garavito (4-5) relieved Pearson to get the final out of the third inning. He then pitched scoreless frames in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, allowing just one hit in the process and earning his fourth straight victory in the process.
It appeared the âDads had cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Crawdad CF Andrew McCutchen tripled with two on and one out, but on appeal Hickory 3B John Santiago missed third base so Hickory remained two runs short.
Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth, RF Brad Corley reached on an error leading off and LF Jason Delaney walked. Kannapolis starter Dan Cortes was relieved by Paul Moviel who gave up a bunt single to 3B Tony Mansolino that loaded the bases. Hickory catcher Steve Lerud reached on an error that got the âDads within 5-4. Crawdad 2B Cameron Blair's ground out to shortstop tied the game at five. Then SS Brent Lillibridge reached on an error to give the âDads a 6-5 lead and Santiago's sacrifice fly made it 7-5.
With Hickory leading 8-6 and the tying run at the plate with two outs in the eighth inning, Crawdad reliever Justin Vaclavik was called in. He struck out CF Paulo Orlando to get out of the eighth frame. In the ninth he allowed a two out single to DH Fernando Valenzuela Jr., but struck out catcher Brent Metheny to end the game.
Moviel (0-3) allowed two unearned runs on one hit in one inning to take the loss. Vaclavik earned his fourth save of the season.
The âDads travel to Charleston, WV, to conclude the season's first half with a three game series starting Friday night at 7pm. Hickory right hander Nic Suero faces WV righty Ryan Marion.
