SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah continued its hot hitting streak to down the Columbus Catfish 7-4 Thursday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. With the win, the Sand Gnats won the series 3-1 and completed the doubleheader sweep.

After winning the first game, 6-5, the Sand Gnats picked up where they left off in the night cap, getting on the board for two runs in the first when Ofilio Castro reached on a one-out single and moved into third on a double to center off the bat of Edgardo Baez. Justin Maxwell stepped up next with an RBI ground-out, and Leonard Davis made it 2-0 on a run-scoring single to center.

Savannah tacked on two more in the second when Tim Pahuta was hit by a pitch to lead off, and John Poppert followed with a single to left. Alex Nunez' sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position, and RBIs by Francisco Plasencia and Castro gave the Gnats a 4-0 cushion.

The Gnats added another pair to their total in the fourth when Plasencia took Columbus starter Jordan Pratt deep for a two-run homer. The long ball was Plasencia's first of the season and scored Poppert, who reached on a leadoff walk.

Columbus could not break through against Sand Gnats starter John Lannan until the fifth when Drew Locke hit a solo home run in the fifth. The Catfish rallied in the seventh, scoring three runs with the help of two straight RBI doubles by Russ Mitchell and Lucas May.

Lannan picked up his third win of the season, giving up just one run on six hits in six innings on the mound. He struck out four in the effort.

The Sand Gnats are next in action Friday at 7:05 p.m. when they open a three-game series against the Charleston RiverDogs. Left-hander Gene Yost will make the start for Savannah while right-hander Bryan Villalona will go for Charleston. Friday is Hurricane Awareness Night, sponsored by the Chathan Emergency Management Agency and will also feature post-game fireworks, sponsored by Hargray.
