AA Winnipeg Goldeyes

Chance to Move up Wild Card Standings Slips Away

August 27, 2013 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

It went off the rails in a hurry and, despite having chances to get back into the game, the Winnipeg Goldeyes couldn't get things rolling in their direction.

Goldeyes starting pitcher Jason Jarvis didn't get out of the second inning Tuesday night, as the Goldeyes lost 11-4 to the St. Paul Saints before 6,936 fans at Shaw Park.

Despite the loss, Winnipeg remains 1 1/2 games behind the Gary SouthShore RailCats in the American Association wild card race. The RailCats lost 3-2 to the Kansas City T-Bones Tuesday night.

Jarvis gave up three runs in the first inning thanks a three-run home run by Saints first baseman Brian Burgamy and was on the hook for four more runs in the second inning. He was replaced by Taylor Sewitt with one out in the second inning.

St. Paul added a run in the sixth inning and three more in the eighth inning.

The Goldeyes scored a run in the first, third, seventh and eighth innings, but left seven men on base in the game, including two in the third and fifth innings when they had chances to cut into St. Paul's lead.

Fehlandt Lentini led Winnipeg with a three-for-five night at the plate and had a home run and two RBI. Josh Mazzola also had a solo home run in the eighth inning.

Defensively, the Goldeyes made five errors in the game, which was one away from tying the franchise record for most errors in a game, and led to three St. Paul runs.

Jarvis took the loss, while Sewitt, Gabe Aguilar, Pete Gehle and Mark Hardy worked out of the bullpen. Sewitt, Aguilar and Hardy had scoreless outings.

St. Paul starter Anthony Claggett gave up two runs in six innings of work to get the win.

The two sides will meet again Wednesday night at Shaw Park. In a match-up of lefties, Chris Salamida will take the ball for Winnipeg against St. Paul's Cole Nelson. Game time is 7 p.m.

Tickets for all Goldeyes games are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Ticketmaster.ca, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting at Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
