Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Kansas City, KS - Justin Bass hit a walk-off solo home run off the first thrown by Ian Durham in the bottom of the eleventh as the RailCats lost 3-2 to Kansas City on Tuesday night. Gary SouthShore dropped to 53-40 with the defeat, Kansas City improved to 40-54.
With Winnipeg's 11-4 defeat at St. Paul, the RailCats still hold a one and a half game lead in the wild card with six games remaining on their schedule.
Bass went to the opposite field, down the left field line, on the first pitch thrown by Durham in the eleventh to give the RailCats their third loss in extra innings this season.
The loss ended a futile night for the RailCats offense which mustered just one hit and three walks in eleven at-bats.
The RailCats jumped on the board first thanks to a pair of errors by the T-Bones. Adam Klein walked to begin the inning then stole second on the first pitch. Mike Massaro then hit a ground ball to shortstop and Felix Molina threw the ball away attempting to get Klein at third.
Danny Pulfer then brought in one with a groundout to third and Cristian Guerrero followed him with a two-out single to left to make it 2-0 RailCats. Both runs went unearned in the inning.
Kansas City came right back with back-to-back singles against Billy Spottiswood in the bottom of the first. After a wild pitch put both runners into scoring position, Jairo Perez lifted a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-1. Spottiswood came back to strike out Kennard Jones and get Trevor Coleman to fly out to end the threat.
The T-Bones tied the game in the third with two outs in the inning. Joey Gathright doubled to begin the inning and moved to third on Trevor Coleman's fly out for the second out of the inning. Brandon Jones then lined a 2-1 offering from Spottiswood into center to score Gathright and make it 2-2.
Rick Zagone dominated the RailCats after their half of the first; retiring 23 in a row before being removed with two outs in the ninth. Zagone received a no-decision and allowed just two unearned runs in the first inning; then didn't allow another baserunner.
Billy Spottiswood danced around trouble all night stranding seven base runners over seven innings. He allowed a pair of runs on eight hits and two walks. Billy threw a season-high 119 pitches and struck out four.
In the eighth, Kyle Lindquist entered with runners on first and second and worked his way out of the inning without a run coming across. It was the first of three straight innings in which the RailCats bullpen allowed the winning run into scoring position but held the T-Bones off the board. The RailCats set a season-low for hits (1) and baserunners (5) in a ball game.
The RailCats and T-Bones continue their series on Wednesday night. The RailCats send RHP Morgan Coombs (5-2, 5.10 ERA) to the mound; the T-Bones will throw RHP Ethan Cole (0-7, 6.04 ERA).
Listen live to the RailCats and T-Bones beginning at 7:00 p.m. on 89.1 FM The Lakeshore and RailCatsBaseball.com on Tuesday night.
