Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - A two-out, two-run rally in the seventh inning Wednesday carried the Cedar Rapids Kernels to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Cedar Rapids (18-13, 57-44) also rallied to a 1-0 lead in this three-game series with Wisconsin (18-13, 49-51).

Alex Isola highlighted a strong start to Wednesday's opener for the Kernels. He gave Cedar Rapids a 2-0 lead in the second on a two-out, two-run double that drove in Tyler Webb and Trevor Casanova. Isola also threw out potential basestealers during the fourth and fifth innings.

Wisconsin surged ahead, 3-2, within the top of the sixth. Jose Martinez inherited a bases-loaded jam from Josh Winder with two outs in the inning. A wild pitch to Je'Von Ward allowed Jesús Lujano to score, and the next pitch was hit into right field for a go-ahead single as both David Fry and Thomas Dillard came home on the play.

An error helped Cedar Rapids reclaim the lead in the seventh inning. Ricky De La Torre's two-out groundball went through Gabriel García's legs, and Casanova scored from second base. Two batters later, Gilberto Celestino produced an RBI single to bring in De La Torre and lift the Kernels to their winning margin of 4-3.

Martinez (6-3) was credited with the win and is now tied with Winder and Austin Schulfer for the team high in victories. Rickey Ramirez posted scoreless work over the eighth and ninth innings and earned his third save in as many chances.

The loss and the blown save went to Chad Whitmer (6-2). He allowed an inherited runner and another unearned run of his own within the seventh.
